Our exclusively breastfed 7 1/2 week old used to eat every 3 hours with one period of cluster feeding approximately every 24 hours. In the past 2 weeks or so she has been eating every 2 hours 24 hours per day. She will typically nurse from 10 to 15 minutes (occasionally up to 20). I get the sense that she is just snacking instead of getting a good full feed. I have tried all the typical methods to encourage her to keep eating. At night she is falling asleep but during the day, she's awake and just stops eating. In the past couple of days if I try to encourage her to eat more when she is awake she gets upset and starts to cry, making me think she is full.

I know that all babies are different but by this age our older daughter was going 3 to 4 hours between feedings and often at least 5 hours at night. The big difference is that she had pumped breastmilk and occasional formula by bottle due to breastfeeding difficulties.

Is there something I'm missing? Any suggestions? Or will I be stuck feeding every two hours indefinately?

Update - As predicted by Neen after a week of doing nothing differently she started going back to 3 and 4 hours between most feedings with the occasional 5 hour stretch at night.

Sounds like you're doing fine Tammy, it's the 6 week growth spurt I'd bet. It can kinda streach out for longer than you think it "should". If she's acting full, and won't take the breast again, she's gotten her hind milk and she's good, try not to worry. It won't go on indefinately, she'll start nursing less frequently again, probably pretty soon, hopefully, but I don't put bets on what the very littles will do!

This can be the really hard part of a good nursing relationship, how they'll change the game on you suddenly without a word of warning and make you doubt yourself. Sneaky little beggars! Good luck, keep nursing on demand, remember than she knows what she needs, you only think you know what she needs (for breastfeeding, everything else, of course Mommy knows best!) :)

Thank you Neen you're always the voice of reason. "she knows what she needs, you only think you know what she needs" -good point (this Tammy responding). (Edit by Scott: that's it, I'm changing my password! :)

Fantastic answer Neen. Just wanted to add something I read which I can't find now, but it suggested that the growth spurt-feeding frenzy link went the other way round: baby goes through developmental stage -> gets a bit stressed by information overload -> feeds more for comfort -> grows due to increased milk intake.

That is so cool Meg, and it wouldn't surprise me a bit!
