How do I get my 2 year old to stay in bed when I put him to bed for the night? Do you think it would be ok to put a baby gate up in his door way? Please help me

We have had a similar problem with our daughter since moving her to a bed. Some things that we have tried:

  • sitting outside her bedroom door and everytime she came out of bed we picked her up and put her straight into bed without much fuss. This is normally only is required several times at night over 20 minutes before she gets the message
  • We were closing her door and put a child catch over the door handle so she couldn't open it but after a major earthquake their room doesn't actually close properly so that one doesn't work anymore.
  • I would try the child gate but perhaps take it down after he is asleep in bed.
  • We also tell her if she stays in her room we will come back in ten minutes to check she is okay. we keep going back until she is asleep.
  • Sitting in her room until she goes to sleep. We will only stay if she is lying down trying to sleep.

I would encourage you to perserve because soon he will get the message that when you put him to bed it is bedtime. Now our daughter normally goes to sleep quite happily.

We have also found that telling them you are coming back, and then actually remembering to do so, is usually pretty effective at getting them to stay in bed.

I agree with Meg. But with our son we have to do one additional thing. Whenever he comes out of his room we first check his pull-up before we send him back.
