My wife is breastfeeding our 1 year old and also dieting. We are not sure weather to try a low carb diet to induce Ketosis because we don't know the effects while nursing. Does anyone know of any studies that say if it is dangerous to the baby or not?

This question was asked of Dr. Thomas Hale and his answer was that ketones are likely to go into the milk and alter the taste, which the baby might not like, but it isn't likely to be dangerous.

However, you might also want to consider this advice from the breastfeeding website, Kellymom. In particular that

Most moms should avoid dropping below 1800 calories per day.

as very low calory intake may reduce milk supply.
