I have a 2 1/2 year old son who seems to be very big for his age. He eats normal amounts and is NOT chunky at all. Right now he weighs 42lbs. He is bigger than his 3 1/2 year old sister in weight but not height. I do not allow my kids to eat junk a lot and they get plenty of exercise. I'm just wondering if I should ask my dr. about it or if it's sorta normal.

I know some 5 year olds that are 40lbs.

How much do your 2 1/2 year olds weigh?

Ha... Some people look at me like I'm crazy when they see me changing my now 3 year old's diaper. He looks like he could be 5 years old!! The changing tables are always way TOO small!! Good thing is that he's starting to go on the potty. WOOHOO!! – Mommy trial and error May 17 at 13:58

The CDC publishes growth charts which may be useful for comparison.

I don't have a 2 1/2 year old for reference, but my two 3 1/2 year olds are 13kg and 15kg - about 29lb and 33lb respectively.

My 2 1/2 year old is almost 25 pounds, but she's a girl. We were actually worried that she was under weight. She is on the lower end of the weight scale, but our doctor said growth is hereditary that she'll probably be tall and slender like my husband and me. Next time you go to the doctor you could ask to have his weight checked and then they should be able to tell you his percentile with how he compares to other children his age. You might even be able to just call in his weight and they could compare it to his previous weights and then also tell you his percentile scores.

When my wife was pregnant of our first baby, a doctor gave us this advice: "don't spend money on a baby scale, its main usage is to feed your anxiety".

Since then, we know how much our children weigh only for giving them correct dosage of medicine when they are sick (for your answer, this is 12kg for our 18 month old girl and 15kg for our 3 year old boy).

This is the thing your pediatrician should be advising you on. If he or she has not, get another one immediately! Every time we visit for a well-check, our pediatrician shows us where our son is (and where he has been) on the growth chart that shows various percentiles.

It doesn't matter much what percentile they are, as long as they are following roughly the same growth pattern over time (not ballooning from 25th percentile to 99th), and that their height and weight aren't too much out of whack (you don't want to be 10th percentile in height and 80th percentile in weight, for example).

This. Exactly. My daughter is tall and thin for a 2 year old, but she is following her curve. – Michelle Oct 20 at 14:49

My 2 1/2 year old little girl weighs 24 lbs. BUT she is also only 33 inches tall...everyone around her seems to be growing...and she doesn't. I have a 4 year old little brother that has been 40 pounds since he was 3 so I wouldn't worry too much about it. As long as your kiddo is healthy and getting enough exercise! =)

My 2.5 year old is 40lbs, but he is also 40 inches tall - so he is actually a skinny little dude. As long as he is eating well and an happy/active, I am happy.

My 7 year old weighs 44lbs. He is very small for his age, obviously. Our 2 1/2 year-old daughter weighed 25lbs today at her checkup.

My 2 year ols weighs 13.5 kilograms or 29.7 lbs and is fairly short compared to others her age but I think it really all depends on how your little one is growing according to their growth chart and that they are making a fairly even curve. Def check that out with your local clinic or paed. I have been overweight ALL my life so have been keeping a close eye on my kids and my paed eventually told me not to worry.... as long as they are healthy....

My 2 1/2 year old daughter weighs 29.6 pounds, and is almost 38 inches tall. She is very tall for her age. She was small most of her life, she just stopped growing up so much and allowed her body to grow out and not look so thin. I wouldn't worry. Your daughter is probably fine... I used to worry my daughter was too thin, but she is just fine. Just really tall compared to others her age, so it made her look thin. God Bless

my son will be 2 1/2 next month and he weighs 40 lbs and is 40 inches tall, I have been concerned too since when people see him they think he is at least 3 or 4 yrs old, they wonder why is he is so tall but the doctor said he might just be a little taller when he grows up. Reading these answers have helped me feel better since i know i am not alone with this issue.

my 2.5 year old is only 21 lbs, but she is also only 31 in. tall. My 6 month old weighs 3 lbs less than her.Our doctor says she is proportionate she is just small. I'm only 5' so he says its hereditary. My nephew weighed 47 pounds at 3 and he still ways the same at 4.5. I would say if your doctor doesn't see a problem then hes fine.

Hello samirah and welcome to moms4mom. This should really be asked as another question, not as an answer to an existing question. Click on the Ask Question box in the upper right corner. In the mean time, these growth charts should be helpful: cdc.gov/growthcharts/charts.htm Have you spoken with your doctor? – Scott Jun 16 at 16:05

my daughter will be 3 in november and weights 18lbs, and is 32in tall. she is healthy as can be, but very very small. doctors have been very strange about it.

i know you said he is big, but this just offers the opposite end of the spectrum for you. where my daughter lays in the 1% growth curve.

if anyone wants to talk about it: roman_bubble@hotmail.com
