I was recently out at the mall with my 2 kids. It took a lot of effort to get them out to the car and THEN I realized they both needed new diapers. My choices were to go back into the mall or change them on my lap in the car. BUT then when I went to get the diapers out of the trunk I realized that there was so much empty space in the trunk and it seemed easier if I changed them in the trunk. (It's clean and there even happened to be a fluffy blanket to put down underneath them) When I got home I told my husband that I changed diapers in the trunk. He thought this was strange and so now I'm wondering if this should just be a one time thing or if it's not too strange to do this every once in a while. Am I going to get evil looks from strangers if I do this? Has anyone else done this before? |
Been there, the trunk is comfy and well protected from the elements. If it is the best site that is easily available then I say change on.... 1
We change ours in the trunk too - it is much easier than the seat and more comfortable for the baby.

I've done it in the trunk, in the back seat, and stranger places, too. Don't worry about looks from strangers. People without kids will basically tune you out unless you're actively getting in the way of whatever they're trying to do. People with kids will knowingly smile, 'cause they've been there, too. |
Great idea!! However, our trunk is normally full of gear. I often use the back seat of the car though to change our little one. I pop down the change mat that I carry around in her nappy bag and viola! -instant change table! We've got leather seats so if there happens to be any little mishaps, it's nothing a little sanitiser won't fix! 1
I used to do this, and I thought the same thing about the leather seats-hehe, but now we have 2 car seats in the back so there is no more room for that.

I probably would if I had a car. I had to change ours in a train once, and the 'changing table' in the toilets was actually just a sticker where there should have been a table... so I ended up changing him in the luggage storage area, next to everyone's suitcases! I say, change wherever you need to. As long as you're not getting in anyone's way (or getting anything that's not yours peed on....) it's all good. See, things like this make for great stories later in life. :)

I don't think its strange at all. I've personally seen it several times myself in parking lots such as Costco, Walmart, Safeway, etc. Ask yourself this... if you had a big SUV with a back hatch that opened and lots of room would you think twice about it? Probably not. So I guess this answer is just to say, "Don't worry about what other people think." and "I don't think its nearly as strange as you might first think." Moms are pretty adaptive to the situation. |
I have changed their diapers in the trunk, on my lap (in record time I have to say) and other places. I also made sure that it wouldn't make people lose their appetite. My kids were afraid of the bathroom on plane so the attendants were nice and let me change them up front. Most times on the plane I just changed them at our seats since I always had the row to myself and had the changing pad. I always made sure to have plastic bags while traveling too. |
Definitely a great idea! I have changed my child's diaper in the car many times and hey, I think the trunk is even better! More space and not as difficult, plus you can leave the diapers in the trunk til you get home . . . less smelly :)! |
i was out with my 2 babies and 3 year old brother and 2 year old sister shopping. I could hear something vibrating in their nappies and they all did really smelly wet runny poos and i didnt know where else to change them. (there wasnt a changing facility available). so i had to change them in the car. i mean where else to change them. people were making comments. but i didnt have a choice. another time i changed them in the shopping mall because the nappy was so badly needed to be changed. |
I have done it many times. We prefer it when it is possible.
