I've heard airbags can accidentally deploy due to wiring shorts caused by aftermarket product installation errors, rust corrosion, etc. Is this exceedingly rare?

There are a number of reasons your child should not play in a parked car - risk of locking themselves inside, risk of overheating if it's a warm day, risk of the child managing to release a safety brake and/or put the car into gear (which may also result in airbag deployment if the car rolls into something and the impact sets off the airbag) - so while I can't find any specific statistics to comment how likely an accidental airbag deployment is to occur while a child is playing in a parked car, there are plenty of articles detailing the multiple dangers facing a child who is playing in a parked car.

Hope this helps.
