We have a nanny who watches our daughter four days a week, and we are trying to figure out an appropriate holiday tip. We are already giving her two paid weeks vacation over the Christmas holiday. Should this affect the tip amount in any way? Or is tip + paid vacation typical? Any thoughts / experiences would be appreciated.

My wife and I also employ a nanny, and here in Canada anyway it's the law to provide an employee with a minimum of two weeks paid vacation per year. So, considering that it's legally required, we don't look at that as a gift, tip, or bonus, but as part of the nanny's regular compensation.

In addition to that regular compensation, we choose to give our nanny both a gift (from our daughter) and a cash bonus (from us) during the holidays. We're happy to give something extra because of the good care provided to our daughter. I would suggest at least a week's pay.

Excellent point about vacation being part of regular compensation, so it should not be considered in this equation.
