My two and a half year old son has his day-time nap fairly early in the day, usually starting about 11.30 - 12.30 and lasting about an hour. I know that if he hasn't gone down for it by 1.30pm it's too late and I need to keep him awake otherwise he won't be tired at bedtime. Sometimes (today for example) his nap can be much earlier (today he has napped from 9.25 - 10.25, having woken up from the night at 6.45am). He won't have a second nap, regardless of the timing or length of his first one (that's his choice, not mine).

I recall that my daughters at this age had their naps after lunch and the deadline was more like 3 or 4 pm.

Is my son very unusual?

My 2.5 year old has a nap after lunch, going down between 1 - 2 pm. She still has a fairly long nap lasting at least 2 hours, but it can run as long as 3 or 3.5 hours. If she's not awake by 5, I go and wake her. She goes to bed at 8 pm (regardless of length/timing of nap).

From what I understand from other moms in my peer group, this is a little unusual due to the length of nap (I'm not complaining though!)

When my son was 2, he had a good 2+ hour nap starting at about 1pm. It slowly shifted over the course of the year until he was napping beginning at about 3 and we had to wake him up after 1.5 hours or it would be hard to go to bed on time at night.

If he's sleeping well and is healthy, don't sweat it. All kids are different. Let him have a nap at whatever time and for as long as he seems to need it. (I do recommend trying to do it at the same time every day, for the sake of regular sleep patterns and easy bedtime routine.)

Our 18 month old has a nap around 9-10am lasting about an hour, having woken up at 7am and had breakfast with Mummy and Daddy. She then stays awake until bedtime, which is around 7pm. If she misses the morning nap, she's kept awake until bedtime - otherwise she won't settle.

EDIT: Apologies she's only 18m, wondered if this side of 2y would be of any help/interest.
