(Not sure if you guys over the pond call them split ends too, it's when the ends of your hairs split)

My daughter is nearing 5 and has never yet been to a hairdresser. I cut her fringe (bangs?) a couple of times when she was little, but not since her hair has been long enough to tie back.

Recently her hair has become increasingly difficult to manage, because it's very fine and knotty at the ends, and I've noticed some split ends, and some broken hairs in my lap when I've finished brushing her hair.

I'm not sure what I can do

  • cut her hair a good bit shorter (it's currently half way down her back)
  • got hunting just for the split hairs, and cut them?
  • swallow my fatherly pride and go to a hairdressers (please, no!)
  • something else to help strengthen her hair?

regular trimming will help prevent split ends and hair will appear thicker, but unfortunatly to deal with the current split ends she will need a good couple of inches off, you dont need to take her to the hairdressers but proper hair scissors will help.

I agree with regular trimmings & proper scissors. I've also heard that cutting it while it's wet helps to not split hairs while cutting, maybe similar to cutting fingernails while moist...but I don't know where I heard that.

Well I can say that bob haircuts probably can look very nice on most 5 year olds, add to that the fact that it is more manageable, easier to wash and dry, and will most definitely eradicate split ends.

We went for that a couple of months ago and I just wish that we had had it cut sooner. My daughter loved the new style. For visual back-up you can look here

I am not an expert for fine hair, but I think cutting and regular trimming does strengthen hair ends. Natural oil treatments can strengthen hair ends too and help prevent them from splitting!

So I would suggest you take her to a hairdresser :)

So you're saying take her to the hairdressers AND get it cut short? Are you looking for downvotes?! :)
