I'm asking this question for someone else, so I don't know the exact details. It's a 10 year-old boy, who is apparently very shy. Recently moved house, not making any friends. Any experiences to share? |
I was also very shy as a child - it's very difficult to overcome... people are either introverted or extroverted, and I don't think you can change. Having said that, with my younger daughter, I thought she had inherited the "shy" gene, until I realized that I hadn't actually taught her how to make friends. So one day, we went over a few scenarios in role-playing, and now (at 5yo) she is armed with the confidence of knowing "how" to make friends, which gives her that much more of a boost when in new, uncomfortable situations. Believe it or not, kids don't know to say things as simple as, "Hi, my name is Peter. I like your sand-castle. Can I please play with you?" or "I'm Sara - what's your name? Do you want to play tag?" until someone tells them that's how it is done :) +1 for teaching her how to make friends.
