My son is 2 1/2 and is 40 inches tall and weighs 40 lbs. He is not chunky, he is just sort of tall for his age. Does anyone else have a tall 2 1/2 yr old too? Is this normal?

My son was also in the 40/40 club at 2 1/2, and my daughter is on her way there, so in my house that is very normal! :)

If you are concerned, talk to your doctor. Keep in mind that every kid grows at a different rate, and, as Scott mentioned, the charts are averages.

According to this chart from the CDC, your son would be above the 97th percentile, so he's certainly tall for his age.

If I'm reading this chart correctly he's between the 90th and 97th percentile for weight to height ratio.

Still, these charts are just measurements of where a child is relative to others. For instance, most people in the world live in Asia. If you live in North America, you're not "normal". That doesn't mean there's a problem, it just means you're a member of a less populous group, like being left-handed.

Our daughter is definitely on the very tall side. She was up around the 99th percentile when she was really small. She's only 19 months old though.

+1 @Scott for figuring out those charts! I've had kids at both ends of the charts (my oldest over 95th and my daughter under 10th percentile) and decided a long time ago that as long as they didn't shoot waaay over the top, or drop off the bottom, I'd call it "normal". (Fortunately so does my GP!)

According to this growth chart, that would put him up above the 95th percentile, but I wouldn't consider that abnormal.
