My son is three and his bedtime ranges anywhere from 9:00 to 9:30 to sometimes even 10:00. This is because my husband works long hours and is gone early and doesn't come home from work until about 7:30-8:00 at night; he wants to spend time with our son. When I tell people that, they absolutely freak out and tell me that their child is alseep by 7:30 every night and that I'm depriving my child of much-needed sleep. Of course I would NEVER intentionally do something to harm my child, but he's still getting about 10-11 hours of straight sleep as he wakes up between 7:30 and 8:00 the next morning.
So, I guess my question turned out to be long-winded. Just looking to hear what an average bedtime for your young child/ren is.

The amount of sleep a child needs does vary with the child. My 4.5 has the had the same bedtime for at least 3 years. He normally goes to bed at 7pm and wakes between 6 and 7am. So gets 11-12 hours. Because my husband is home at 5pm we have dinner at 5:30 and the kids have some playtme with daddy after dinner. Our 2.5 year old has the same bedtime but she also has a nap in the afternoon.
Recently we have had some late nights and yesterday it was really obviously that our 4.5 year was overtired so we made him have a rest and he was in bed at 6:30pm.
Does your son have a rest during the day. If you are concerned that he isn't have enough sleep maybe make sure he gets an afternoon rest. If he isn't get tired then he is probably getting enough sleep.
This article is an interesting discussion on the various studies into sleep requirements.

Our 2 1/2 year-old goes to bed around 8pm, but that's because it's the same time as her older sister, who has to go to school in the morning. When she was 2 1/2 she went to bed much later, but she woke up much later too.
Most days, our toddler still gets a nap in too, so she sleeps about 11 hours overnight, and 1-2 hours in the day time.

My 3 (soon to be 4) year old goes to bed (ie, we start bedtime routine) around 7pm and he is usually asleep around 8pm. He gets up around 6:30am so we can get out the door in time in the morning, and he naps about an hour to 1.5 hours at daycare. Weekends he usually skips his nap on Saturday, and consequently gets up a little later (7:30ish) on Sundays. He will often have a longer nap on Sunday (2hrs+) unless we have something going on that gets us out of the house over naptime.
He's always needed a lot of sleep though so this may not be typical.
